Sigma Sport Onyx Fit Heart Rate Monitor
Sigma Sport Onyx Fit heart rate monitor is an intermediate heart rate monitor. It is the next one up from the Onyx Easy in the Sigma Sport Onyx series.
It uses digital wireless transmission technology and has many more features (in bold in the list below) compared to the Onyx Easy heart rate monitor.
The main features of the Sigma Sport Onyx Fit heart rate monitor are:
- Continuous heart rate monitoring
- You can manually set your heart rate training zone.
- You can also get the watch to automatically set your heart rate training zone based on your gender, age and weight.
- You can set an alarm to alert you when you are training above or below your heart rate zone limits
- You can do 3 types of training: Free training with 3 HR zones, Lap training with 3 HR zones and Training program with 1 HR zone. The Training program can consist of 3 phases: warm up (optional), workout and cool down (optional).
- You can run 2 independent stop watches with start, (pause, restart,) and stop.
- Countdown timer
- You can review your training duration, average heart rate, maximum heart rate, calories consumed and current time during your exercise session.
- After you have finished, you can review the overall details of the last session: Date, start time, total duration, average heart rate, maximum heart rate and calories burnt. In addition you can view other information specific to the particular training type you have selected. See below.
- You can save training details for seven sessions.
- You can also review cumulative data summed over longer periods of time (per week, per month and since last reset): Number of training sessions, total training duration, average training duration and total calories burnt.
- Fitness test: Use it to check your fitness progress periodically.
- Basic time keeping: Time, date and alarm
- Backlight
- Button tone: If this is switched on, you get a beep when you push a button.
- Wireless heart rate monitor (ECG accurate) with a digital chest strap transmitter and a wrist watch receiver
- Self-changed batteries for both the wrist watch and the transmitter
- Bicycle mounting bracket
Note: Digital transmission means that you can train with a group of people in close proximity with hardly any risk of interference from their heart rate monitors. The downside is that your transmitter chest belt is not going to work with gym equipment like treadmills etc.

The Sigma Sport Onyx Fit defines three heart rate zones as follows: 1st HR Zone (55 to 70% of HR Max), the 2nd HR Zone (70 to 80% if HR max) and the 3rd HR zone (80 to 100% of HR Max). The watch can calculate these zones for you automatically. Of course you can always set your heart rate training zones manually.
Here are the 3 types of training you can do with the Sigma Sport Onyx Fit heart rate monitor:
Free training: You train for as long as you wish and you train within the 3 heart rate zones in any way you please. When you cross from one zone to another, you will hear beep(s) to alert you of it. At the end, in addition to the overall info (see list item above), you can view the following: - Percentage and time spent in each of the 3 heart rate zones
- Cool down heart rate information (optional)
Lap training: You can record laps with this feature. While out running, you can now record your time for each individual segment of your run. You can now measure your lap time every 400 meters or every mile or whatever distance you choose. You can mark up to 50 laps and you train within the 3 heart rate zones. At the end, in addition to the overall info (see list item above), you can view the following: - Percentage and time spent in each of the 3 heart rate zones
- Your average lap time and time of your fastest lap
- For each lap, your average and maximum heart rates
- Cool down heart rate information (optional)
Training program: Here you specify a training duration and training heart rate limits. You can optionally include a warm up phase and a cool down phase. Even for these phases you can specify training durations and heart rate limits, giving you full and precise control over your training. When you have finished, in addition to the overall info (see list item above), you can view the following: - Time and percentage spent in your (workout) heart rate zone
- Times spent in the warm up and cool down phases (if you use them)
As you can see, this is all very detailed. With the Sigma Sport Onyx Fit all you would want to know is here for you to analyze!
The Fitness Test involves you doing a 5 minute warm up, followed by a 1 mile walk. It then gives you the following results: Fitness level, estimated VO2 max, time, heart rate at the end. You can do this test about once a month or so to see if your fitness has improved.
The Sigma Sport Onyx Fit comes with 2 independent stop watches. The first stop watch is the one you normally use when you are training. The second stop watch is one which you can use separately to time the duration of something else (whatever it is that you need). A countdown timer can also be used to specify a precise duration.
Summary
The Sigma Sport Onyx Fit is a great heart rate monitor offering a host of training features. There is also no lack of training information available at your disposal for your analysis and future planning. It is also relatively inexpensive for what it is.
